When you are studying French vocabulary, it is helpful to have French/English word lists at your disposal. While you do not want to be entirely dependent on a word list that has both French and English on it, vocabulary lists are helpful for the beginning French student.
Studying French/English Word Lists
Of course a French/English word list does you no good if you don't study it! There are a few different ways to study a vocabulary list. Find a method that works for you and stick with it. You will not learn the language overnight, but by studying consistently, you will build your vocabulary one word at a time.
Hide and Peek Method
Take a two column list and cover up the English half. As you go over the French words, pronounce the word first and then say what the word means in English. If you can't remember, you can peek, but make sure to study that word again later. After you've finished with the French side, cover it up and repeat the exercise with the English words uncovered.
Creating French Sentences
Another good method for learning vocabulary is to create your own sentences using the vocabulary in question. How much easier will it be to remember that jolie means pretty if you write out, "La femme est jolie" and associate it with a pretty woman?
Regardless of the method you use to study, you do want to make sure that, eventually, you are looking less and less often at the English words. After all, you cannot take all of your lists with you while you're traveling!
